What are the BRICS, countries that seek to “rebalance” the world order and end Western dominance?

BRICS is an abbreviated expression that represents five emerging power countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is an economic association whose objective is to enhance the possibilities of each of its members. The first four countries created the BRIC group in 2006, which South Africa joined in 2010, for which they added the letter S.

The alliance represents 22% of the world’s surface, 42% of the global population and 24% of the planet’s GDP. In addition, the group as a whole contributes 16% of exports and 15% of world imports of goods and services.

What are the BRICS, who call for a “rebalancing” of the world order?

Top diplomats from the BRICS countries called for a “rebalancing” of the world order in talks in South Africa, as the bloc seeks greater relevance on the international scene in the context of the war in Ukraine.

“Our meeting must send a strong message that the world is multipolar, that it is rebalancing and that the old ways cannot cope with the new situations,” Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said in his opening remarks. .

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has largely isolated Russia on the international scene, pushing it to strengthen relations with China and other countries, including South Africa.

BRICS study admitting new members

The foreign ministers of the BRICS group of emerging economies recently confirmed that the bloc is studying formulas to open the door to new members. However, they recognized that there is still work to be done to activate this expansion.

“We have come to the conclusion that we do not yet have what we believe is a useful document that we could present to heads of state” on the group’s expansion, said South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor, host of the meeting held by the ministers in the South African city of Cape Town (southwest).

The head of South African diplomacy, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the BRICS this year, referred to the summit that will take place from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg.

Last March, Pandor stated in an interview that it had received “twelve letters” from countries interested in joining the group, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Algeria, Argentina, Mexico and Nigeria.
