History in the United States. As so many times in her early life, the Afghan Shunghla Mashwani (10) visited with his family the mountains of the Cle Elum Valley. For the outing on that Sunday, June 4, she decided to dress in a polo shirt and jeans. In a certain section, without realizing it, she distanced herself from her family. When her parents noticed her, they began to look for her desperately. In that area of Washingtonknown for its low night temperatures (3 °C), the mobile phone signal is non-existent.
Shunghla followed the river, guided by intuition and several visits to the mountains with her parents. As she decided to sleep near her, the floodwaters from her threatened to overwhelm her.
The search began when the owner of a cabin heard the screams of the girl’s predecessors. He lent her his satellite phone and they were finally able to contact the emergency services.
The deployment of more than 100 search team members, mostly volunteers, began the rescue throughout the night of June 4. For the air route, there was support from two helicopters and, for the land route, advanced mapping technology.
At 10:00 am (Peruvian time) the next day, two rescuers found her among the trees. There she had slept to keep warm. As soon as they could, they asked for a boat to transport her to meet her family.
Speaking to local media, Kittitas County Sheriff Chris Whitsett said: “We’re so thankful (that Shunghla survived) because for searchers, we know that many times our first fear is ‘oh no, that kid probably was in the river and drowned before we even got that call.'”
