Since its hegemony, the consumer system has exploited workers on all continents. The logic of the market continues to be dehumanizing because wage earners barely have labor rights: they are silenced when they complain, violating them with unpaid overtime in precarious situations. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUCfor its acronym in English), the largest trade union center in the global sphere, published its mapping of 2022. The outlook in Latin America is worrying.
The ITUC indicators warn of a deterioration in the rating from 3.48 to 3.52. In countries like Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador different trade unionists were victims of violent attacks. 88% of the nations of the American continent restricted the freedom of assembly for political purposes and 77% denied their workers access to justice.
In the Peruvian case, the companies considered to be violating workers’ rights are AB InBev (drinks) and Heinz-Glas (glass).
The worst region is, with 19 countries allegedly in violation, the Middle East and North of Africa (OMNA). Unlike America (3.52), the MENA average is higher (4.53). There, in Libya, Palestine, Syria and Yemen, rights were violated. The main victims are labor migrants, hoping for a livelihood, who died “particularly in the United Arab Emirates,” the text reads.
The 10 worst nations in the ranking are: Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Eswatini, the Philippines, Guatemala, Myanmar and Turkey.
