El Salvador witnessed one of the greatest sports tragedies in its history after the death of 12 people and leaving around 100 injured as a result of a stampede in the Cuscatlan Stadium. The tragic event occurred last Saturday, May 20, prior to a soccer match between FAS Sports Club and Alliance by the Major League Soccer of El Salvador.
“The National Civil Police and the Attorney General of the Republic will carry out an exhaustive investigation of the events that occurred in the Cuscatlán Stadium. Everyone will be investigated: teams, managers, stadium, ticket office, league, federation, etc. Whoever is guilty, no will remain in impunity,” said Nayib Bukele on his Twitter account.
What is known so far about those who died in the Cuscatlán Stadium?
Carlos Fuentes, spokesman for Comandos de Salvamento, initially indicated that the deceased are 7 men and 2 women, later the numbers were increasing. “So far there is confirmation of 12 people deceased. The others died in the care centers. Thank God there are no minors, ”he said.
Likewise, in the early hours of today, Sunday, May 21, the relatives of the deceased have approached the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) to request information and begin the process of handing over the corpses. On the other hand, an estimated 100 injured were transferred to health centers.
