What is the largest center for ‘genius children’ in Latin America like and what is the profile of the students?

They are between 3 and 17 years old and are considered ‘genius kids’ for their great capacity and intellectual development, which allow them to learn between 30% and 50% faster than an average child. Imagine that, at 7 years old, they receive robotics, economics and medicine classes, or that their higher IQ reaches 130 points. All these students are in the Talent Attention Center (CEDAT), in City of Mexico.

In this school for the gifted, different subjects are taught that stimulate their students, who have revealed that they not only like to participate constantly, but also that they never get bored of their classes, which does not happen in other schools.

This center has been considered as the largest in Latin America and all students maintain a profile. Next, you will be able to know the reason for that qualification and what is the profile of their ‘genius’ students.

“My other school was easy”

To begin with, students gather in their classes not because of their ages, but because of their intellectual performance. In this way, “in a single school year, they can pass two grades (…) or even more,” according to BBC News Mundo.

Entering CEDAT is not as easy as it seems. Recognizing ‘genius’ students is complex, as diagnoses can sometimes go wrong. According to the records, only 3% of the population is gifted, which is equivalent to one million Mexican children and adolescents. Likewise, as the British media adds, more than 11,500 have not been identified in the country.

Once located, the life of the students would change with the specialized teachings. “My other school was easy. I liked astronomy, but I didn’t talk to my friends about it, because I felt sorry for it. I was so young (…) it was like being a mini-teacher”, says Alexis Martínez, a 7-year-old CEDAT student.

His partner Mikella Gamborino also thinks the same. “Oh, I’m already with mine. I do feel a difference I feel better and I communicate better,” he said.

Among other points in which these students stand out, is the fact that “they are not traditionally the children who get 10’s in school, many times, because they are no longer interested”, reveals Andrew Almazán, teacher at CEDAT and son of the directors of the center, which was founded in 2010.

Almazán is also gifted. At the age of 12 he began to study Psychology and Medicine at the university. “His two bachelor’s degrees were followed by six master’s degrees and two doctorates from centers as prestigious as Harvard, in the United States, or Oxford, in the United Kingdom,” according to BBC News Mundo.

Currently, at 28 years old, he conducts research on the little geniuses in Mexico from the largest center in Latin America.
