The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, welcomed the “exemplary” general elections held on Sunday, October 2 in Brazil, and congratulated the presidential candidates, the progressive Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, for passing the second round, which will be held on October 30.
“We salute the Brazilian people for their democratic vocation and their electoral institutions for the exemplary conduct of the general elections. We congratulate the candidates who will participate in the second round, Lula and Bolsonaro,” the president wrote on his official Twitter account.
Brazilians went to the polls in one of the most polarized elections of their last decade. With 99.9% of the votes counted, former leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was the most voted candidate, obtaining 48.4% of the votes, compared to 43.2% achieved by the current ruler, the far-right Jair Bolsonaro.
However, as neither received more than 50% of the votes, both will dispute the presidency of Brazil in a second round scheduled for next Sunday, October 30.
Lula and Bolsonaro will have three weeks to dispute the vote of 8% of the voters who supported the center-right Simone Tebet, the Labor Party member Ciro Gomes and a dozen candidates who did not exceed 1% of the vote.
For the last day of elections in Brazil, electronic ballot boxes were enabled to carry out the vote. However, despite the measures implemented, throughout the electoral contest long lines of up to four hours were recorded in various cities of the South American giant. Some voters pointed to unprepared workers and disorganization as the main cause of the delay.
