William Rankin is the protagonist of this incredible story that occurred on July 26, 1959. The lieutenant colonel was flying his F-8 Crusader plane to South Carolina, United States, when he was surprised by a gigantic storm cloud. He never thought to survive after being trapped for 40 minutes.
The details of that nightmare were narrated by Rankin himself in his book “The Man Who Ride the Thunder”. And it was not just any cloud, but the cumulonimbusknown to cause lightning and thunder.
Continuing with the story, the American pilot directed his ship above the cloud, some 14,300 meters high, but a sudden failure caused the engine to shut down and his destiny changed. Falling with a parachute was his only option to survive, however, the low temperature would be his new challenge.
Exactly, Rankin was about to -50°C and with little oxygen, which made breathing difficult. At 6:00 pm, she decided to pull the ejection handle and jump, only to lose her glove. The decompression was immediate, her eyes and ears even bled, while her abdomen began to swell.

Finally, the storm released him and the pilot ended up falling into a tree, hitting his head against the trunk. Before seeking medical help, he looked at his watch and noted that 40 minutes had passed. Rankin suffered minor injuries, and in 2009, he passed away at the age of 88.
