Rejection of Venezuelan migrants reaches 62% in Latin American and Caribbean countries

Latin America and the Caribbean it hosted 7 million migrants in 1990; that number grew exponentially to almost 15 million by the year 2020. The massive migration crisis in Venezuela, which constitutes the most significant exodus in the last 50 years in the western hemisphere, provoked a mobilization that challenged the world, due to its intensity in so little time.

About 6.8 million Venezuelans left their country. Recent data obtained from a study of the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Development Program show that the nations of Latin America and of the Caribbean welcomed more than 80% of that migrant population.

The study shows that 62% of the population in this part of the world does not agree with receiving Venezuelan migrants.

The population of Peru (81%) and Ecuador (80%) are the ones that expressed the greatest rejection towards the arrival of Venezuelan migrants. Colombia, the country that hosts the most Venezuelans, also expressed their disagreement (79%). “The predisposition of Colombians to receive migrants in general is low, but the data reveals that it is even lower in the face of Venezuelan migration,” the document indicates.

The text also emphasizes the challenge that the new migratory flows represent for the governments and communities of Latin America and the Caribbean; however, they represent an enormous opportunity for the development of the region.

“Some of the challenges are concrete, tangible, have been tested and analyzed for the design of public policies. Others are more difficult to identify, measure and address, such as xenophobia and public perception of migrants. The attitude of the local population towards migrants is key to integration. Public opinion influences the migration agenda and policy decisions,” says another part of the reading.
