This Sunday, June 25, the general elections will be held in Guatemala and there are already favorite candidates to win, according to the polls. These are Sandra Torres (Une) and Edmond Mulet (Cabal), who lead the voting intention after the removal of Carlos Pineda. Around 9 million civilians will attend to cast their vote, either for one of the candidates, null or blank. However, there are still doubts about these last two options.
What is it and what happens if I vote blank?
According to article 237 of the Electoral Law and Political Parties (LEPP), the blank vote is one that “does not represent any mark or sign on the ballot”; that is, it is not valid for the elections to be held again, but they are considered as valid votes for the purpose of determining the majority in favor of a candidate.
What is the difference between the white vote and the null vote?
The main difference is that the blank vote it has no effect on the electoral process, while a null vote can influence the final result due to its legal validity. It should be noted that this will only be valid in the first round of the elections.
Another difference is that the blank vote does not represent any brand. For the invalid vote, it is enough that any incorrect symbol is shown, according to article 237 of the Electoral Law.
Usually, taking into account the past general elections, the percentage of null votes exceeds the blank vote.
