Woman who threw her newborn baby into a dumpster is sentenced to 18 years in prison

a woman of New Mexico, United States, was sentenced to 18 years in jail for throwing her newborn baby into a shopping center dumpster, causing serious bodily harm. The 19-year-old mother’s defense argued that she has a mental health condition and how old she was when she abandoned her son; however, she did not avoid the custodial sentence.

During the trial, the jury convicted Alexis Avila for child abuse, which involved serious damage to the body of the infant. The young woman’s defense attorney insisted that she has an undiagnosed mental health disorder that played a role in her decision.

As the judge said William Shoobridgeduring the trial, luckily the baby survived after enduring the winter for several hours until being found by passers-by, otherwise a murder sentence would be disputed.

“You have given yourself a life sentence for knowing what you did with your son,” he told the defendant. “And he’s also given his son the same life sentence, and that’s probably something that’s just as difficult to deal with as any length of time he might have in prison,” she added.

Investigators reviewed street security cameras, where they identified a suspicious car. This led them to find the whereabouts of Alexis Ávila and his subsequent capture.
