This is Gladys, the orca leader of a gang that attacks and sinks ships in Gibraltar

A ship was rammed by a group of orcas in the Gibraltar Sea between Spain and Portugal. This has been the latest attack in a series of incidents caused by dozens of cetaceans led by an orca named Gladys, researchers suggest.

According to the Atlantic Orca Working Group, there have been 20 incidents this month alone against small boats sailing in the area. Investigators say that the animal’s behavior was due to the fact that it was the victim of illegal fishermen who tried to hunt it down, as they suspect that Gladys may have been trapped in the nets of said ships.

The strange thing is that this attitude is being imitated and learned by other orcas living in the area, so the ‘gang’ is causing various damage to boats and boats.

Earlier this month, a sailboat called the Alboran Champagne also received a similar impact from three orcas. The boat was left in such bad shape that it could not be towed and drifted aground.

The captain of the ship, Werner Schaufelberger, He told German magazine Yacht that he saw two smaller whales imitating the charge of a larger orca.

“The little ones jerked the rudder at the rear, while the big one repeatedly backed away and rammed the boat with full force from the side,” he recounted. “The two small orcas copied the technique of the larger one and, with a slight impulse, launched themselves towards the boat. Mainly on the rudder, but also on the keel.”

“What started as a seemingly one-off encounter ended with the orcas breaking the ship’s rudder and then proceeding to rip pieces of the ship for an hour,” he said. April Boyes, a British sailor, to The Independent regarding one of the attacks on a crew of four who had to call for help.

On May 2, six killer whales collided with the hull of a yacht. This caused thousands of damages. One of those present, Janet Morris, recounted that she felt like “easy prey” and that she saw “a matriarch clearly bigger than her was definitely nearby and almost supervising.”
