Najin and Fatu are two white rhinos left alone after the death of Sudan (male), who died of natural causes in the natural reserve of Kenya. Due to this sad news, his species is about to be declared extinct, so scientists from various countries around the world seek to save his species.
The population of this mammal has been dramatically reduced. In 1960 there were 2000 white rhinos, but at the beginning of the nineties there were only 25. Years later there was a small repopulation, but since 2004 there are fewer. The turning point was in 2018, when the last male rhino died.
The hope that science could bring
However, scientists from various parts of the world refuse to declare this species extinct, so they have found a solution. It turns out that biologists have already extracted 14 eggs from Fatu.
They did the same with the last male before his death: they kept his sperm and today it is guarded in various laboratories on the planet. The solution for the species is to achieve its assisted reproduction.
Oxford University works on project
On the other hand, the University of Oxford works on the Rhino Fertility Project. Their goal is to use ovarian tissue from deceased female northern white rhinos to culture a large number of eggs for later fertilization in a laboratory.
However, science offers one more hope for this species, even more revolutionary. The idea would be to extract skin cells from the two living northern white rhinos to create stem cells. Once achieved, they would be used to obtain immature eggs and fertilize them artificially. It is a process that is being investigated in Japan, whose scientists claim to have bred several mice from two male mice.
