The story of Lauren Juyia, a doctor from Florida, USAwent viral after he discovered his own cancer, despite the fact that, as indicated, he was experiencing mild symptoms. He now shares his experience and encourages people to learn to identify warning signs.
Juyia, a gynecologist with Elite Women’s Care in Brooksville, told “Good Morning America” that she began to feel “pelvic heaviness” in August of last year and nothing else out of the ordinary.
However, after a short time, she began to feel a “mass” in her pelvic area. This prompted her to get an ultrasound at HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital. “Having experience in obstetrics, we described the size by weeks of pregnancy and so I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have a mass the size of 16 weeks.’ From experience, I realized that this was my ovary,” she said.
After the ultrasound confirmed that she did indeed have larger than normal masses on her ovary, she underwent surgery to remove them. These had been extended to ovaries, uterus, appendix and even the abdominal area.
However, until then I did not know that it was actually colon cancer. “I had a bit of fatigue. I was a bit tired in the afternoon for about two months before this, and as a mother with two young children, I had recently been breastfeeding them,” she recounted Juyia.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Colon cancer symptoms include bowel changes such as constipation, blood in the stool, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or unexplained weight loss.
Dr. Juyia was finally diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and began six months of chemotherapy treatments. At the end of March of this year she underwent one more surgery to remove a dormant tumor.
Until now, tests have shown that he “has no evidence of disease.”
What warning signs have you advised to take into account?
The 38-year-old doctor and mother of two children indicated that it is necessary to be attentive to the first warning signs of the disease, such as fatigue and a feeling of “pelvic heaviness”, especially for the very young.
