Attack against Venezuelan migrants in Texas: who was the perpetrator and how much are the victims?


On Sunday, May 7, a subject ran over a group of Venezuelan citizens in front of a center to house migrants in Brownsville, Texas. Recently, Lieutenant Martín Sandoval and the Brownsville Police Chief, Félix Sauceda, revealed more details about the perpetrator of this attack, as well as the number of fatalities and injuries.

Lieutenant Martín Sandoval, spokesman for the Brownsville Police, said at a press conference that the author of the mass hit-and-run was identified as a man who did not want to cooperate with the authorities. “He refuses to have mugshots and fingerprints taken,” he told NewsNation.

However, Brownsville Police Chief Félix Sauceda recently identified the driver who struck the group of Venezuelan migrants as George Alvarez, 34 years old.

Authorities also point out that Alvarez ran a red light and lost control before the accident. Later, he tried to flee the scene, but witnesses to the hit-and-run detained him until the police arrived.

Venezuelans who lost their lives in Texas: how much are the victims?

The person in charge of the Obispo Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, Víctor Maldonado, indicated that between 20 and 25 migrants were sitting on the sidewalk waiting to catch a bus across the street from the shelter. Maldonado pointed out that the migrants were Venezuelans who had arrived at said facility two or three days ago.

When the authorities arrived at the scene of the accident, they found seven people dead, while six more were taken to hospital with minor or serious injuries.

However, the death toll rose to eight after one of those affected died at a local hospital, according to authorities.
