Poem “Defeat” by Rafael Cadenas: what is its meaning?

Rafael Cadenas’ most famous poem is “Defeat,” which refers to a generation that was deluded by the idea of a Latin American “revolution.”

It should be noted that Cadenas from a very young age not only developed his passion for poetry, but also for politics. He was a faithful militant of the communist party of Venezuela, which is why he was in jail and in exile, to the point that he had to finish his high school in Valencia.

However, over time, Cadenas distanced himself from that position. In response, the government of Nicolás Maduro refrained from congratulating him when he won the Cervantes prize. “I have not received congratulations nor do I expect it. I have a disagreement with the regime, but I am not participating in politics either,” said the writer.
