Paraguayans will vote this April 30 in some presidential election marked by accusations of corruption and the lack of gender parity. The Colorado Partywho has governed the country for more than 70 years, is experiencing a crisis after the accusations against the former president Horace Cartes (current party president) and the vice president of the Nation, Hugo Velazquezwho were pointed out last year as “significantly corrupt” by the US Department of State
In the elections the long-awaited will also be relegated gender parity. The situation is longstanding in Paraguayanwhich was the last country in South America to recognize the right to women’s suffrage in 1961. Women represent the 32.95% (2,997) of the 9,095 candidates running for 768 charges, among them those of president, vice president, deputies, senators, governors and members of departmental boards. The figures show that there are more options for them to be men (which add up to 6,098 applicants) who occupy the most positions.
