Argentina registers at least 35 deaths and more than 41,000 infected by dengue

According to data provided by the National Epidemiological Bulletin, Argentina is registering at least 35 deaths nationwide and 41,257 cases of dengue in 15 jurisdictions in four regions. These results range from the beginning of the epidemic phase, on August 31, 2022, to April 8 of this year.

According to experts, the figures are worrying when compared to historical values. The number of patients is 27% higher than that presented in 2016, and is 48.4% more than that reported in 2020 for cases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. “Added to this situation is the fact that 73% of those infected are infected with the DENV-2 serotype of the virus, a more harmful, deadly strain that grows much faster than the others,” adds RT.

The infectologist Ricardo Teijeiro highlighted that this new epidemic is very different from those that Argentina usually faces, as climate changes have accelerated infections. “The outbreak is becoming important, with a number of deaths that we have also not seen in recent years,” she said.

The doctor also highlights the importance of going to a medical center if you suspect you have dengue. “It is necessary to make an early diagnosis. If I have symptoms today (fever, headache, joint or muscle pain), I should go to the doctor, not overlap it by taking medication,” he added.

The Government warned that the situation could become complicated in the following weeks; For this reason, citizens must follow the indicated measures, such as covering containers that hold water and using repellents every three hours if they are outdoors.

For their part, the authorities are working on a project that consists of sterilizing male mosquitoes altering their DNA before returning them to the wild. So far, “it has been possible to make this modification in 10,000 specimens per week and it is expected to reach 500,000. The medium-term objective is to carry out the first release in November and, in this way, reduce the population of the mosquito vector,” quoted RT.
