The Government of Honduras made official this Saturday, March 25, that it has terminated the diplomatic relations it had with Taiwan. Said announcement was made 11 days after the Honduran president, Xiomara Castrodeclare their intention to establish ties with China.
The Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edward Henry Queen, reported that the Government “has communicated to Taiwan the decision to break diplomatic relations between the two.” In this way, they reaffirmed their recognition of the existence of “One China in the world”.
For its part, the Ministry of Taiwan Foreign Relations responded to the decision of Honduras and described it as a serious damage to the Government and its people for ignoring the 80 years of friendship between both countries.
“A high price”
Taiwan’s foreign minister Joseph Wudeclared last Thursday that Honduras “he asked a high price” for maintaining diplomatic ties with Taipei. The Honduran Vice Foreign Minister, tony garcia, confirmed that they requested about 2,000 million dollars.

“A responsible country” seeks to restructure its public debt, which is why Honduras thought that “Taiwan could do it with its reserves and unfortunately they could not,” GarcÃa stressed.
Following Honduras’ decision, only 13 countries in the world recognize Taiwan, including Paraguay, Haiti and seven other small island nations in the Caribbean and Pacific. In an apparent effort to consolidate this group of allies, the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wenwill visit Guatemala and Belize next week.
