After a parent filed a complaint with the school board arguing that the students were being exposed to pornography in art class, as the children had been shown Michelangelo’s statue of David, Hope Carrasquilla, principal of the Classical School in Florida, USA, she was forced to resign her post.
The president of the Council of the educational unit, Barney Bishop, explained that the father felt “totally upset” because his son “should not be seeing that.”
It also added that the image was not only inappropriate to be shown to sixth grade children (11 years old), but that this event happened without prior notice to the parents or guardians.
According to various local media, Bishop added that “parents’ rights are sacred” and, after an urgently convened school board, the principal was offered two options: either resign or be fired.
After that, Carrasquilla decided to step aside in the midst of the controversial situation after a year in office. “Showing the complete statue of David is appropriate at a certain age,” Bishop said in an interview with Slate.
“And you don’t have to show the whole statue! Maybe kindergartners we only show the head. You can appreciate that. You can show the hands, the arms, the muscles, the beautiful work that Michelangelo did in marble without showing everything,” she added.
It was also learned that within the lesson there was also a tour of other works such as the Birth of Venus, by Botticelli, and the Creation of Adam, by Michelangelo, painted on the vault of the Sistine Chapel.
